General Information about the Club.
History.
The
Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum is one of the youngest Rotary Clubs in Britain. Following
an initiative of the Rotary Club of Ellon, the establishment of a Rotary Club
in Oldmeldrum was mooted during 1998. After much behind the scenes work by the
initial enthusiasts, the Inaugural Dinner of the interim Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum
was held in May 1999 with 31 founder members, of which 7 are ladies. This was
followed on 4th September 1999 by the Charter Dinner, attended by RIBI President
John Hockin and representatives of many of the other Rotary Clubs in the District,
at which the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum was presented with its inaugural Charter.
Activities.
As well as the regular Monday night meetings in the Redgarth, the Club
has, during the last few months, organized a number of extra-mural activities
and social events, among other things a visit to Bristow Helicopters,
manning a Wheel of Fortune and Tombola stand at the Oldmeldrum Sports,
assisting at the "Kids Out" day for special needs children in Aberdeen,
and sponsoring a young candidate for this year's Rotary Youth Leadership
Award (RYLA) camp at Nethybridge. The Club also competes regularly in
the local Curling league and Rotary Gavel competitions.
Activities planned for the winter include a Burns Supper, a Christmas
Carol Singing Collection, and collections for ARCHIE, the Aberdeen Royal
Children's Hospital Appeal Foundation.
We are also one of the 9 local Rotary Clubs sponsoring the Aberdeenshire
Life Education Centre (ALEC), a mobile caravan unit with a trained instructor,
providing information to local Primary School pupils on healthy living
and drug awareness.
The Club produces a A4 size news sheet, the "Squeeky Wheel", primarily as information for members.

Art & Music Festivals in Oldmeldrum, March 2005, 06 and
07.
In order to mark the Centenary of the founding of Rotary International,
the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum wanted to organize a new event which would
involve members of the community.
In 2005 we ran the first Art and Music Festival, the aims of which were:-
To promote local singers, musicians, artists, and photographers by giving them
an opportunity to perform and display their work before an audience.
To encourage people of all ages to have an interest in the arts in general,
including painting, photography, playing and listening to music.
To develop skills and offer professional advice.
To encourage awareness of the local environment.
To promote the attractions of Oldmeldrum and the surrounding local area.
The first Festival included events such as :-Young Musician of the Year;
Photography Workshop, Display and Competition; Story Telling; Watch the
Artist at Work, and Latin American Dancing.
As this proved to be very enjoyable, there were follow-up Festivals
run in 2006 and again in 2007, with the second and third Festivals building
on the success of the first year. Additional new events included an Art
Workshop; Music Workshop for Children; Children's Craft Workshop; African
Singing, and a Jamming Session. All of the events were well attended,
with locals and visitors enjoying the various and varied art and music
experiences on offer.
After three years, Rotary Club members decided that if the Festivals
were going to continue and develop, more community involvement was required
to help with the organising and planning. A meeting was arranged in Oldmeldrum
to discuss the future of the Festival. However, the response was very
disappointing. As a result, with the exception of the Young Musician
of the Year Competition, there will not be an Oldmeldrum Rotary Art and
Music Festival in 2008
We would like to say thank you to all Rotarians, family and friends,
who helped make the Festival weekends a success. Special thanks to all
of the individuals and local business who gave their time, skills and
support with the three Festivals. “ Festival Organisers”

Oldmeldrum and environs.
Oldmeldrum is an old established burgh in Gordon District, on the
northbound A947 road from Aberdeen to Banff, approx 16 miles north-west of Aberdeen city. Originally a market centre for the local agricultural community, its population
has expanded considerably over the last 20 years with an influx of personnel and businesses associated with the oil industry in Aberdeen.
The town has a well-known distillery, which produces the excellent Glen Garioch malt
whisky. For the visitor to the area, there are two local golf courses, Oldmeldrum G.C.
and Meldrum House G.C. nearby, and also local facilities for trout and salmon fishing. Oldmeldrum has three
hotels and a number of Guest houses and B & B's, and is central to the NTS Castle Trail. In June each year is held the Oldmeldrum Sports, a very entertaining spectacle on the Scottish highland games circuit.
For more information about Oldmeldrum, its history, organisations, and
its people, visit the Oldmeldrum
Community Website. With the opening of the new Meldrum Academy school
in Oldmeldrum in 2001, there has been a big change to much of the community
infrastructure. The community Library and Police Station are now incorporated
within the school main building, and extensive facilities are available
for further education and recreation for school pupils and adults. For
more details visit the
Meldrum Academy website.
